Student Financial Support

Financial Responsibilities

The BMS program provides stipend and tuition/fee support for all students during their first two years of study, and as much of the third year as our budgetary resources allow. The level of third-year funding will depend on available sources of student support, and is subject to annual review. Once BMS funding ends, financial responsibility shifts to the thesis advisor, who is expected to provide both stipend and tuition/fee support until the student graduates. The current stipend for 2021-22 is $42,500. Tuition and fees information can be found on the Registrar's Website. All non-international students will be charged at the ‘California Resident’ rate. Please let Demian know if you have any questions, but rest assured he will walk you through the process when the time comes.

We would like to draw your attention to this page on the BMS intranet regarding fellowships and grants. This contains information and links for applying for extramural funding, and we hope you find it helpful. Extramural funding secured by students during their second or third year is extremely helpful in allowing BMS funding sources to stretch farther, thus allowing these sources to cover as much of the third year class as possible.

BMS Retreat Costs: In addition to providing funds for stipend and fees, thesis advisors are asked to provide funds for BMS students to attend the annual fall retreat at Granlibakken at Lake Tahoe (early to mid-October each year). Attendance to the retreat is mandatory for 1st and 2nd year students. Information about costs are posted on our program website, but the cost on average for students is about $450 for a two-night stay. We also encourage you to attend yourself, and bring other students and postdocs from your lab.
